RP Etiquette

General

Starting off in RP can feel intimidating, with a plethora of rules and unfamiliar terms to navigate. We understand this can be overwhelming, which is why we’ve created this list to help those feeling overwhelmed. Our goal is to ensure a positive experience for all community members. While no expertise is required, if you’re unfamiliar with the art of roleplay we recommend reading through the below list.

Stay in Character

Staying in character or breaking character can heavily impact a roleplay scenario. It's important to exercise flexibility and adaptability as all roleplay comes with unexpected twists and turns.
Even if someone you've met has broken rules, while this can be frustrating it's best to maintain composure and report concerns to the appropriate teams at an appropriate time.

Remember not to identify someone by their voice. There are lots of players with multiple characters, which can be confusing initially. It's easiest to verify that you're already acquainted in another way.

Pacing

Being aware of how quickly or slowly a scenario or overall plan in roleplay is transpiring is an important aspect to storytelling. It's something that comes easier with experience, but attempting to drag out a scenario be dull and boring for participants. On the other hand so can progressing things too quickly. Finding the right balance is key.

Allow others a chance to contribute to the story! If you've found yourself in a situation with other characters, remember that they are all also telling their own story. Sharing the spotlight can always lead to more interesting interactions in the long run.

Backstory/Lore

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you're playing a cowboy in the year 1899. It's important to consider the language used in that day and how people presented themselves.

Backstory is talked about often, but it is not a requirement to good roleplay. We encourage new role-players to focus more on learning who their character is, and how to represent that character appropriately. Lore can always come after a good relationship has been established with your character.

For those who are interested in creating a lore, think about things like who your character is, and what made them who they are today. What direction are they going in? Are they a reformed criminal struggling with making the right decisions?
Remember that your characters decisions have impact on this lore. A hardened criminal wouldn't be rescuing damsels in distress without ulterior motive!

Visual Aid

Unfortunately, not everything can be expressed within the constraints of a server quite like real life. The use of visual text can help enhance the gameplay of you, and those around you.

More about visual aid and its intended uses
  • /me to show a spelling verification or non verbal communication
    • /me Box#1234
    • /me New Dakota

  • /do to show an action
    • /do Smirks slightly

Out of Character Assistance

Sometimes asking someone nearby is the best way to get an answer. If trying ask a technical question, roleplaying to the best of the ability is the most accepted way of asking.

Roleplay code words and phrases

Flex your _ muscle means push the corresponding button

Think hard usually means to enter a command using first the T key, then the / key

Sign language means the use of /me

Dropping your accent means temporarily stepping out of character. This is a last resort option and should only be used on a whisper in a very private area.

If you’re unable to solve your problem through roleplay, please either ask in # | general-questions or # | create-a-ticket, rather than disrupting several players roleplay.

Ultimately, roleplaying is about having fun and enjoying the creative experience. Embrace the storytelling, character development, and interactions with others to make the most out of your roleplaying adventures.
